Review : Movie - Don 2

So, why is every other so called critic in the town trashing Don 2? It is a pretty decent movie albeit minor aberrations. In fact, I found it better than the first one. If the same people can’t stop raving about a nonsense MI-4, I guess, they should give Don a little due respect.

Plot:
The story starts 5 years after where it ended in the last part. Don (Shahrukh Khan) is now the biggest drug dealer in Asia and has plans now to expand to Europe. But to do that he has to take care of the reigning drug lords who themselves are wary of the rising Asian King. Don plans a bank heist to meet his goals and sets out to build his team which includes his old foe Vardhan (Boman Irani), a computer hacker Sameer (Kunal Kapoor), a mystery woman Ayesha (Lara Dutta) and a group of goons working under Jabbar (Nawab Shah). Meanwhile Malik (Om Puri) and Roma (Priyanka Chopra) are still following his trail. Does he succeed in the bank heist? Do Vardhan, Sameer and Jabbar loyally toe his line or ditch him? In all of this, how he handles Malik and Roma and the Interpol - makes up for the rest of the story.

Screenplay/Dialogs:
The story has a lot of twists and turns and the dialogs are smartly written. The film moves at a fast pace. The only time I felt it was slowing down was in what was the mandatory song ‘Zara dil ko tham lo’. Else there is brisk pace with all the masala of a action thriller – a jail break, a car chase, a bank heist, fights, explosion, globe trotting in the blink of an eye – Thailand, Zurich, Berlin et all. Dialogs are crisp, intelligent and stylish – checkout Vardhan and Don’s bantering on many occasions or how Don convinces Jabbar to join him.
Now to what really didn’t click like the song I mentioned above. For one thing, Hrithik’s cameo was completely out of place – you need to see it to believe that an otherwise smart director like Farhaan Akhtar actually chose to keep it. Second a lot of people may not like Don and Roma’s interactions towards the end of the film. But minus these minor aberrations it’s a good film.

Cast/Performances:
Shahrukh Khan is in superb form. I am not a big fan of his but he nails this one. He as Don has style, attitude and charisma all rolled together. I wish they had retained the look he supports for the first 15-20 minutes through out the film; it went so well with the attitude. Boman Irani is effective as Vardhan. Rest of the cast looks pretty OK but Shahrukh is the life of the film.

Music/Songs:
The music at best is mediocre and thankfully there are not too many songs that interrupt the film - just one.

Verdict:
The film is a good watch if you choose to ignore/forget one or two minor mistakes. It has all the ingredients of a masala potboiler. I’ll give it a 3.5/5
